San Diego: places to go and things to do

San Diego offers park museums, historic neighborhoods, public beaches, and a working waterfront. Coastal stops are spread out, so choose Balboa Park, the bay, or La Jolla as the main setting rather than stitching every beach into one day.

Getting around San Diego

Use buses for a chosen central-city cluster, and plan a separate journey for La Jolla or Torrey Pines. Coronado requires crossing the bay by a bridge route or a paid ferry connection. Balboa Park has paid parking, so include transport costs even when the activity is free.

Plan for the weather

Coastal cloud, wind, and sun can all occur during a beach day. Bring a layer and sun protection, check beach notices, and avoid treating a public viewpoint as a swimming recommendation. Torrey Pines trails can close for conditions; use current park alerts to choose a permitted route.
