Free things to do in Seattle: market browsing and park viewpoints
Free things to do in Seattle include Pike Place Market, Olympic Sculpture Park, Kerry Park. This guide specifies the free part of each visit and separates optional spending on food, transport, exhibitions, and activities. The selected stops are public experiences rather than discount offers or free-trial promotions.
Browse Pike Place without buying anything, walk among outdoor artworks at Olympic Sculpture Park, look across the city from Kerry Park, or spend time on the public paths at Gas Works Park. These are four distinct experiences with no general admission purchase. Market food and transit remain extra. At Gas Works, enjoy the lake from land: entering the water or launching a boat from the park is prohibited, so this is not a free swimming recommendation.
01 · Downtown
Pike Place Market
A downtown public market with produce, food merchants, crafts, and multiple levels to explore.
Choose a few market sections rather than rushing between famous photo stops. Take a food break before continuing toward the waterfront, and keep passageways clear while deciding where to go next. Browsing is free; meals, goods, and booked tours are optional paid additions.
- Budget
- Free to browse; food and shopping extra
- Visit time
- 1–2 hours
- Location
- 85 Pike Street, Seattle, WA
Before you go: Check individual merchant hours and leave room for crowded passages.
02 · Belltown waterfront
Olympic Sculpture Park
An outdoor sculpture setting operated by Seattle Art Museum near the waterfront.
Use the paths for an unhurried art-and-waterfront visit. Leave time to look at several pieces instead of treating the park as only a route through to another attraction, and have a rain alternative nearby. The park is free to visit; any meal or paid museum visit is a separate outing cost.
- Budget
- Park entry free
- Visit time
- 45–90 minutes
- Location
- 2901 Western Avenue, Seattle, WA
Before you go: Check daylight opening times; do not climb or touch the artworks.
03 · Queen Anne
Kerry Park
A small Queen Anne park known for its view across central Seattle.
Treat the viewpoint as a short stop reached deliberately rather than a large park to spend hours in. Check visibility before going uphill, and choose the return journey while you still have energy. The public viewpoint does not require an admission ticket; transport to the hill is separate.
- Budget
- Public park access free
- Visit time
- 20–40 minutes
- Location
- 211 W Highland Drive, Seattle, WA
Before you go: Allow for the uphill journey and respect neighboring homes.
04 · Wallingford
Gas Works Park
A park on the north shore of Lake Union with lawns, industrial remnants, and skyline views.
Plan a distinct north-Lake-Union visit with a return route rather than assuming it is beside the downtown waterfront. Stay in permitted park areas and enjoy the lake from land; this site is not a swimming beach. Public park time is free; reserved picnic areas and organized activities have their own arrangements.
- Budget
- Public park access free
- Visit time
- 1–1.5 hours
- Location
- 2101 N Northlake Way, Seattle, WA
Before you go: Lake access is prohibited: no swimming, wading, fishing, or launching boats here.
How to plan this Seattle outing
Keep Pike Place and the central waterfront in one cluster, and Seattle Center in another. The monorail links downtown with Seattle Center, while Kerry Park involves an uphill neighborhood journey. Gas Works Park is across Lake Union and needs its own transit or driving plan.
A light rain layer helps with market-to-waterfront walks. Wind and showers can shorten a viewpoint visit, so choose a museum alternative before leaving. Wet hills and park paths call for appropriate shoes; a grey day does not prevent an indoor glass-art or music-focused outing.
Keep entry costs separate from the rest of the day
The selected experience at each stop can be enjoyed without buying admission. That does not make transport, parking, food, equipment hire, special exhibitions, or guided tours free. Bring water and a snack if you want to keep spending low. Check the particular entrance and activity you intend to use: a free garden or museum collection may sit beside separately ticketed facilities.

Are all parts of these Seattle attractions free?
No. The budget note identifies the free experience, while paid add-ons and nearby facilities are separate. Do not assume a tour, exhibition, ride, meal, or car park is included because the grounds are free to visit. Follow the linked visitor information for the part you want to use.
